Buying A Las Palmas Property: Here’s How To Get Your NIE

All property buyers in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and everywhere else in Spain, need to apply for a Spanish NIE number before they buy. Here’s what the NIE is and how to get it.

The NIE is “a personal, unique and exclusive number that is assigned to foreigners who, for economic, professional, or social reasons, are engaged in activities related to Spain and require identification in this country”. It is issued to anyone who does business in Spain or has to pay tax in Spain. It is not a residency number as you can have an NIE and be resident in another country.

For Las Palmas property buyers, getting an NIE is a formality, albeit a laborious one.

Apply for your Las Palmas NIE

  1. Apply for an appointment at the Las Palmas Super Comisaria, the main police station, It is on Calle Luis Doreste Silva, 68. You do that online here…Choose Las Palmas as the province, then the Luis Doreste Silva station (first option), then the POLICIA ASIGNACIÓN DE NIE option.
  2. Download the Modelo 790 012 form, fill it in, choose the Asignación de NIE option, and print all three pages.
  3. Go to the BBVA bank on Calle Luis Doreste Silva 77 and pay the €9.84 fee in the cash machine by the entrance (you need to pay in cash so take a 10 euro note). When the machine asks you for a number, use S2800513J. Instructions about what to do at the cash machine should be stuck to the machine but are also included below.
  4. Print off the receipt and take it, along with the three pages of the completed 790 012 form, and original and photocopy of your passport, (or identity document if you are an EU citizen) to the Super Comisaria at the time and date of your appointment.
  5. Non-EU citizens also have to take their signed Arras (property reservation) document to prove that they are in the process of buying a property. The Arras can be signed with a passport number.
