As a rule of thumb, beachfront food tends to be “good enough” because seaside restaurants don’t need to try all that hard to fill their tables.
However, nobody seems to have told the bright young things running Jable.
It’s located in the old Los Años Locos on the corner of Calle Sagasta and Calle Fuerteventura and the food, modern Canarian with a focus on Fuerteventura, is elevated above standard seaside chow but not into the realms of gastrofoam silliness.
We had an excellent aubergine starter served with tahini, chickpeas and a spicy dressing. Low temperature aubergine, it’s a thing!
Then we had a Fuerteventura-style fish course; chunky cherne* served with sweet potato mash and roasted veggies.
Followed by goat-lasagna made with maize bechamel. If you like goaty-ness, this is a must try.
As is the house cheesecake made from Majorero cheese: Baked, gooey and not too sweet, as is the fashion these days.
The service was friendly, eager even, and everything arrived hot and in order. We ate on the terrace but the indoor area is bright and welcoming. Again, not typical on the beachfront.
It isn’t easy to take traditional Canarian food and do something fresh with it so Jable, with its simple yet elegant food, is a welcome addition to the Las Canteras beachfront.
*Cherne is often translated as wreckfish but really it’s a deep water grouper that only seems to live around the Canary Islands. It’s good fish!
